Week 8B in Review

This term continues to fly by with another jam-packed week of events. On Monday we had Chapel, and on Tuesday it was the very last Year 12-led Stage 4 assembly for the year. The assembly began with a special guest dance from the Redlands Rhino and one half of our fabulous School Captain duo for 2027, Tully Sloot. There was plenty of reflection and positivity as Year 12 leaders looked back on their time this year, their various portfolios, and how Year 7 and Year 8 have contributed to the school community.

The assembly ended with a call to leadership from Mr Sean Bowmaker, Dean of Students 10-12. He reminded students that leadership doesn’t just get gifted to you — you have to want it and put in the work. Being a student leader starts by being a leader in your class, in the playground, and amongst your peers. It means being authentic and upholding not just the Redlands values but your own values. If you do this consistently, people will notice — your friends, peers and teachers will look to you, not because of what you represent, but because of how you act. Being reliably trusted to make wise choices and put in the hard yards will help form the foundations of your leadership journey. It is such a privilege to lead this year group. I tell them that often, but probably not often enough. I can only hope that some of my own modelling in the way I lead helps demonstrate what is possible for them too.

Lastly, on Thursday this week we celebrated R U OK? Day. There were some fantastic initiatives led by our SRC students across the school. Upon entry at Gerard St, we had colourful chalk reminders about how to ask and check in with your friends. During tutor time, we watched a few videos and played Bingo based on different phrases and ways you can start these sometimes difficult conversations. If you would like to discuss this more around the kitchen table at home or in your own workplace, there are fabulous resources here.

Spotlight – ISA 2026 Athletics Carnival

Next Tuesday 15 September a number of our representative athletes will be heading off early for a long day at SOPAC. They will be representing Redlands in their respective Athletic events and have been training hard with additional morning sessions for the past few months. Congratulations to these Year 7 students on being selected, we wish you the best of luck on the day.

Snapshot – Tournament of the Minds (TOM)

Last week a mixed group of 19 students attended Tournament of Minds at UNSW. They were competing in STEM, Social Sciences and Language & Literature Challenges. They were in mixed teams across Yr 7-10, which was a unique experience for them. Year 7 students who were selected were spread across all three teams. Well done to all teams who competed this year. We didn’t make the finals but we learned a lot and the teams will be working closely with Ms Wunder to review their feedback this week and compete again next year.
