Celebrating Creativity, Design and Performance
This week has provided some wonderful opportunities to celebrate the creativity, commitment and talent of our students through a number of showcase events that highlight not only the quality of their final work, but also the learning that sits behind it.
Year 12 Design and Technology and Textiles Showcase
On Monday evening, families, staff and students gathered for the Year 12 Design and Technology and Textiles Showcase. It was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the remarkable work our students have produced and, perhaps more importantly, the thinking, reflection and problem-solving that has shaped their projects throughout the year.
While the finished products were impressive, what stood out most was the opportunity to engage with students as they shared their design portfolios and spoke about the journey behind their work. From creating solutions to improve bicycle safety, to designing products that support rowers, and developing innovations to assist people recovering from injury, our students demonstrated a genuine desire to identify real-world challenges and thoughtfully work towards meaningful solutions.
The design process teaches many of the skills that will serve our students well beyond school. It requires resilience, adaptability and the ability to learn from setbacks. Success rarely comes from the first iteration, and it was inspiring to hear students reflect on how their ideas evolved through testing, feedback and refinement.
A special thank you must also go to our Design and Technology and Textiles teachers. Supporting students through major projects of this scale is no small task, particularly when every student is pursuing a unique area of interest. The depth of knowledge, guidance and encouragement provided by our staff has been instrumental in helping students bring their ideas to life.
Year 12 IB Theatre Solo Performances
On Tuesday and Wednesday evening, our Year 12 IB Theatre students presented their Solo Performances as part of their final examination program.
The performances were the culmination of many months of preparation, rehearsal and creative development. Students demonstrated exceptional skill as they brought their work to life through movement, expression, characterisation and carefully considered theatrical choices. The quality of the performances was outstanding and reflected the dedication and courage required to perform independently in front of an audience.
What was particularly special, however, was the support shown by the wider student community. Students from across Years 10, 11 and 12 attended the performances, filling the theatre and cheering on their peers. Following each performance, students participated in question-and-answer sessions, providing thoughtful feedback and engaging with the performers about their creative choices and artistic process.
It was a wonderful reminder of the culture we have built at Redlands. Seeing students willingly give up their time on weekday evenings to support one another speaks strongly to our sense of belonging, community and shared celebration of achievement.
Looking Ahead
While this week has seen our students shining in Design and Technology, Textiles and Theatre, there are still many opportunities over the coming weeks to celebrate the creativity, dedication and talent of our students.
On Monday 14 September, our Year 11 HSC and IB Music students will present their Music Showcase from 6.00pm to 8.00pm. This evening provides a wonderful opportunity to see our Year 11 students perform and to celebrate the progress they have made through their musical journeys this year. The showcase reflects countless hours of practice, rehearsal and refinement, and we look forward to sharing their achievements with our community.
On Tuesday 15 September, we will also welcome families and friends to the opening evening of the Year 12 IB Visual Arts Exhibition from 5.00pm to 6.30pm in Redlands Hall. The exhibition represents the culmination of two years of artistic exploration, experimentation and creative development, showcasing not only the final works but also the thinking, risk-taking and personal growth that sit behind them.
I would warmly encourage families to attend these events if they are able. These showcase evenings provide a valuable opportunity to celebrate our students’ achievements, recognise their hard work and gain a deeper appreciation for the learning, creativity and commitment that underpin these subjects. We look forward to sharing these special moments with our community and celebrating the remarkable accomplishments of our students.
R U OK? Day
Today our Secondary School community joined schools and organisations across Australia in recognising R U OK? Day, an important national initiative that encourages people to connect with those around them and start meaningful conversations when someone may be struggling.
The message behind R U OK? Day is a simple but powerful one: you do not need to be an expert to support someone. Being a good friend, taking the time to listen and checking in with others can make a significant difference.
This morning, members of our Student Representative Council from Years 7 to 10 came together before school to welcome students with positive messages written in chalk at our entrances and the distribution of yellow ribbons. Throughout the day, tutor groups have also participated in activities designed to promote connection, empathy and conversations about wellbeing.
A sincere thank you to our SRC students for their leadership and enthusiasm in bringing this important initiative to life.
Complementing this work, our Year 8 students have recently participated in Youth Mental Health First Aid training. This program equips students with practical skills to recognise when a peer may be experiencing difficulties, safely start a conversation, offer initial support and encourage help-seeking from trusted adults and professionals when needed.
Importantly, the program also promotes self-awareness, reduces stigma and encourages open conversations about mental health. By empowering students to support one another, we continue to strengthen the culture of care that sits at the heart of our Secondary School community.
Spring Fair This Saturday
The Spring Fair is almost here, and we are looking forward to welcoming families, students, staff, alumni and friends of Redlands on Saturday 12 September for one of the highlights of our community calendar.
With rides, games, food, student performances and activities across the campus, there will be something for everyone. Events such as these are only possible because of the support and involvement of our community, and we encourage all families to come along, enjoy the day and reconnect with friends.
There is still time to volunteer. Whether you can assist for an hour or stay for longer, every contribution helps make the day a success. Families can sign up here: Volunteer for the Spring Fair.
A reminder for any Secondary School students volunteering on the day that they may wear plain clothes rather than school uniform. Please ensure clothing is neat and appropriate for a school event. Closed shoes must be worn at all times, no leggings, midriffs and shoulders should be covered, and clothing must not display inappropriate slogans or messages.
Calling All Bakers
No Spring Fair is complete without the much-loved Cake Stall. We are still welcoming donations of baked goods from students, families and staff.
Cake donations can be dropped off at the collection table located in the foyer of Student Services. Please ensure all items include a clear list of ingredients to assist families with allergy and dietary considerations.
Thank you in advance to everyone who has already volunteered, donated or contributed in some way. We look forward to seeing our community come together on Saturday for what promises to be a fantastic day.
This week has been a wonderful example of the many ways our students contribute to life at Redlands, whether through creativity, performance, leadership or care for others. It has been a privilege to see them sharing their talents, supporting their peers and continuing to build the strong sense of community that makes our school such a special place.
