Year 10 Week in Review

Winter School Return for a Weekend

On Friday of last week, the Yr 10 school day paused for a brief moment to embrace long lost friends as our Winter School students returned for a weekend exeat visit. With the bus delayed by 20 minutes and arriving as Period 5 transitioned into Period 6, it was inevitable that there would be some joyous reunions at hand. The excitement was palpable as the Winter School students moved into Liggins Quad, screams of joy, hugs and high-fives showing the deep connections and bonds that exist within our cohort. It was lovely to see our Winter School students and I hope they had a wonderful weekend back with family and friends. We hope they have an amazing final month down at our High Country Campus and look forward to seeing them back at Cremorne once again at the end of Week 10.

Passion Projects Round #2

This week, we again continued presenting our passion projects in Tutor, learning more about one another’s hobbies and pursuits and connecting to our peers within our Tutor groups. I visited Dumolo Red this time to hear Gabby speak about her passion for various crafts, including crocheting, knitting, writing and jewellery making. I was blown away by the quality of toys and jewellery she makes in these pursuits (see below) and intrigued to hear how she has even taken her work to local markets to sell!

Mateo presented his love of tennis to the group, explaining how he enjoys playing tennis each week with friends and is fortunate enough to be able to attend the Australian Open each year to see tennis played by the best! Cooper also offered the group a keen insight into his passion for rowing, detailing the hours he spends training and taking us through the data and statistics his coaches use to help him develop his stroke and rowing capacity.

DR Tutor Mr Fogale also enthusiastically presented to the group his love of running and his passion for international marathons. Did you know that Mr Fogale has competed in all the World Major marathons? He has even made the effort to compete in all 35 Sydney parkruns, to get a flavour of all the local running areas of Sydney!

 

Year Assembly Performances and Presentations

On Wednesday, we were lucky enough to have Leo perform for us in our Year Assembly. Confidently donning his electric guitar, Leo performed a cover of John Mayer’s ‘Gravity’, allowing us to disappear for a moment into the grooves and melodies of this awesome tune. We are always looking for students to perform in our Year Assemblies, so I encourage other students to reach out to me if they would like to share their performance talents with the cohort.

Henry also took the opportunity to speak to the cohort about his recent experience attending the ‘Stronger Together’ Men’s breakfast. He reflected deeply on the importance of shining a light on mental health and, particularly for men, breaking through silences to ensure men are supported by a culture that is open to hearing from people in need and ready to offer them support. Thank you for sharing such an important message with the cohort!

Welcoming Our School Leaders for 2027

Yesterday was a momentous and joyous occasion in the school calendar. Upbeat music was pumping from the speakers as a huge crowd gather in Liggins Quad to witness the announcement of and (metaphorical) passing of the baton to our school student leadership team for 2027.

This year, 114 Yr 11 students self-nominated for positions of leadership – a testament to the commitment and engagement of the group. While we consider all our senior students to be leaders, those who are named on the leadership team bear a powerful responsibility and privilege of serving the school and helping to support their peers engage positively in their day-to-day schooling. We are so excited to see the energy and passion they will bring to these roles. And, in a year’s time, it will be members of our very own cohort who will be stepping up to the plate; so, I encourage them all to support our school leaders and learn from them, as before we know it, they will be in the very same place!

Spotlight:

Spring Fair – Looking for Volunteers!

The Redlands Spring Fair is fast approaching, and we are looking for students in Yr 10 to volunteer on Saturday 12 September. The Fair is one of the biggest community events on the Redlands calendar, bringing together students, families, staff, alumni and friends of the School. We are seeking approximately 400 student volunteers from across Yr 9-12 to help make the day a success.

Students can sign up for a two-hour shift between 9.00am and 3.00pm, with a range of volunteer roles available throughout the day. Students who are available for longer are welcome to volunteer for multiple shifts. Participation in the Spring Fair is a great way to contribute to our community, develop leadership and teamwork skills, and continue developing a service mindset. Voice Notes: Hope in Hard Times: Wednesday 2 September

If you have yet to purchase tickets for this year’s final Voice Notes event, ‘Hope in Hard Times’, this is your final chance. Held at the Orpheum Theatre, the panel will be exploring the power of hope through the lenses of humanitarianism, social enterprise and environmental stewardship. 

This edition also strikes close to the core of our current Yr 10 cohort who are looking towards the process of leadership applications next year and becoming inspiring captains of the School. One of the guest speakers is also James Spencely, father of our very own Roman Spenceley in Yr 10.
