Secondary Sport

2025 Winter Sport

As we reach the end of another busy and exciting school term, it’s time to reflect on the hard work, growth, and accomplishments of our students, staff and school community.

Our sports teams have had an outstanding term finishing up the summer season, with many victories and moments of individual brilliance. Our students have displayed sportsmanship, skill, and determination across the playing fields.

While we celebrate the achievements of this term, we also look forward to what Term 2 will bring! We wish all of our students and families a restful and enjoyable break. See you all next term, ready for more learning, fun and straight into the ISA Winter season first week back.

“Don’t wait until you’ve reached your goal to be proud of yourself. Be proud of every step you take toward reaching that goal.”

– Simone Biles

“Friends of AFL warmly invite all Junior and Senior Boys teams parents/carers to join us on the sidelines for a casual meet-and-greet to kick off the 2025 season. Find us under the blue Redlands tent throughout the Round 1 games.

Please “bring a plate” to share and BYO any drinks. In the event of unfavourable weather, the gathering will be postponed until the following round. We look forward to meeting you all.

Please contact Jo Beck via email joanna@beckfamily.com.au and provide player name / parent contact details so you can be added to the WhatsApp Group.

Winter Sport Open Gym

Winter Sport Open Gym sign-ups are available on the Fitness Centre Pulse page – we encourage all students to come down and give it a go!

Our Long-Term Athlete Development program is designed to develop movement competency, confidence and autonomy as students’ progress within the gym. Whilst all programs cater to individual considerations for Students, we apply a 50%, 75%, 100% rule across our programs.

Students in Year 11 & 12 are required to complete 50% of exercises and structure programmed by staff, with the remaining 50% of their daily programs created in collaboration with the coaches, based on their goals and ambitions within the gym.

Year 9 & 10 Students are provided with 25% individualisation and autonomy within the gym and 75% structure from coaches.

Students in Year 7 & 8 follow a 100% rule, with 75% of sessions programmed entirely by coaches with a movement competency as a priority and 25% of the session prescription as individual choice from coach selected work.

Our new programming application, Lumin Arc, will allow staff within the Fitness Centre to create greater individual considerations for students amongst our program structure and improve the ability to track progress throughout training programs and provide feedback. Students who sign up for open gym or attend a Firsts session will be provided with their program via this application – more information can be found on Clipboard in the activity selection.

Football

It was so great to see all of you on Saturday at the Football season launch as we kick off what’s going to be an incredible season. We could already feel the energy walking around the teams, and we know everyone’s ready to put in the work, have fun and play great football together.

With great support from the Friends of Football Committee, hard-fought games and refreshments were all the talk, with the girls playing against a tough opponent in Monte, and internal games for the boys.

Director of Football Gerry Gomez provided an insightful speech on the significance of unity within the program and the great importance of enjoying yourself and contributing to the Redlands Football community.

We have an exciting season ahead, and we hope everyone is looking forward to a great season. We wish all the players all the best of luck for round 1 next term.

Special Mention

Congratulations to one of our Football coaching staff, Dom Garnier, who has just completed his 104th marathon around the globe. Dom had set himself a challenge to run a marathon on every continent, and to achieve this, he needed to conquer the final frontier – Antarctica. So that is exactly what he did! Always proud of his coaching role at Redlands, Dom even took the opportunity to wear his Redlands coaching gear on some of his warm-up runs, marking what is surely a first for our community.

Congratulations, Dom, on this incredible achievement and for inspiring our students and athletes to set bold goals and push their limits!

Netball

Netball trials are now complete, and I want to extend a huge well done to all the players who participated. Your energy, determination and team spirit made for a fantastic start to the year. Selection was certainly not easy, which is a credit to the hard work and improvement the players have shown already across all age groups.

I’m really looking forward to an exciting season ahead – full of growth, teamwork and great Netball!

Don’t forget, we’re running holiday camps in both weeks during the Easter break.

Rugby

Rugby 7s Gala Day: Tournament Recap

Our school proudly participated in the Peninsula 7s tournament at Narrabean fields, hosted by NSW Rugby. It was a fantastic day, and our teams faced a range of schools outside of our usual competition. This is the first time we have done so as a school.

U14 Boys:

  • Two teams entered the tournament.
  • Many players had their first experience in Rugby 7s or Rugby altogether, offering plenty of learning opportunities.

U16 Boys:

  • Undefeated through 4 pool games.
  • Reached the semi-finals but were narrowly defeated with only 9 players.

U18 Boys:

  • Undefeated through 4 pool games.
  • Unfortunately missed out on the grand finals due to the points differential, despite a strong performance throughout the day.

A great effort from all players, showcasing skill, teamwork and sportsmanship!

We look forward to Term 2 now with official ISA Fixtures kicking off in Week 1. Season draw will be uploaded throughout the holidays.

Water Polo

Games begin in week 1 of Term 2.

Keep an eye out for registration details over the holidays which players and parents will be emailed.

Redlands Concussion Protocols and Updates

Following the publication of the AIS Australian Concussion Guidelines for Youth and Community Sport, the School has released a new Concussion Procedure along with a Concussion Referral and Clearance Form and a Graduated Return to Sport Framework. These documents can be found on Redlands Pulse and are linked below:

In addition, we have published a Concussion Information Sheet which summarises how concussion is managed and the pathway a student must follow to return to competition.

Key points include:

  • recognising red flag signs or symptoms of concussion (call 000 immediately)
  • a student suspected of concussion must follow the graduated return to sport framework before they can return to competition
  • a parent/carer is now required to take their child to a healthcare practitioner within 72 hours of the incident for the initial consult and again after 14 days symptom-free (at rest) before the resumption of contact training

Please read the procedure and if you have any queries on how a student will be managed following a suspected concussion, feel free to reach out to the designated Concussion Officer for each campus.

The following staff members have been designated as the Concussion Officer for each campus:

  • Ms Mia Lundquist (Secondary School)
  • Mr Eddy Atkins (High Country Campus)
